On Tom Petty, Nevada, and the Psychology of Belief and Empathy.

Image
Tom Petty died the same weekend as several people in a mass shooting. And I only cried for one of those things. I cried for Tom Petty I did not cry about Nevada. Does that sicken you? Because it should. I hate my self for this, how dare I not feel bad for the hundreds of people who were injured by a senseless person with a machine gun. That is clearly the bigger tragedy. And yet I only seem to be capable of thinking about Tom... While I was pondering this I remembered this saying I throw around a lot, "one death is a tragedy, a hundred is a statistic." I did not know any of the people who were hurt in Nevada but I do know Tom Petty. I know his music. I know he's one of the reasons why my parents got together. I know how his music changed me personally. But hundreds of people getting injured just is so big it feels impersonal. My puny monkey brain cannot comprehend it all but it can cling on to one person. Empathy is better at looking at one than the whole. I'm sur...

Nash's Three Laws of Mystery Writing.

So I've really gotten back into the Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney series thanks to a really mediocre but oddly endearing musical . And it got me thinking about what does and doesn't make a good mystery story. And I came up with a pretty good axiom for good mystery writing. But then my publishers told me that if I wanted to get anywhere in this world I must have THREE laws. So I came up with two more. So here it is NASH'S THREE LAWS OF GOOD MYSTERY WRITING Law 0: Characters in a mystery story are the most important part. I cannot stress this enough, in any mystery story no one is going to care if your mystery is good or not unless your characters are enjoyable and we want to see them succeed or fail. This is just good writing in general. Law 1: The protagonist and the audience must have the same information. This is a point that I first heard the idea for in this video but it bears repeating here. In any good mystery story the mental feats of the protagonist...

The History of They Might Be Giants. (Pt. 1) The early years.

In Brooklyn New York two men named John would go to form one of the best middle sized Rock 'n' Roll bands of all time. And their name was, "El Grupo de Rock 'n' Roll." Well that's not fair. The story was that they were playing in Central Park and knew they had a large Spanish speaking audience that day so they made up the name on the spot. They had a weird set up with John Flansburgh on Guitar and John Linnel on accordian and sax with a drum machiene of metronome keeping time.. Later they would settle on a better name, "They Might Be Giants." But enough of me stealing information from wikipedia I'm here to talk about some albums damn it. The first five TMBG albums really make up the early year's style. The songs are short, don't over stay their welcome. The John's jokingly once said , "'Some record that come out today come with 10 songs or less.' 'This makes us angry.' 'But instead of cursing the da...

"I'm not dead!" "He'll be dead in a minute." "I feel haaaappy!"

Okay I've been gone to long. I'll be doing five really long entries this week to compensate. To keep it short and sweet as to why I haven't been producing, I had to sound design 10 plays last week get off my back. Addendum:I'm working out the glitches for the custom domain so for now the link will have to be the full blog spot one. Will sort this out later.

The Dingy Motel Game

Here's a fun folk game you need to try out next time you're on a road trip. When you see a dingy crappy worn down motel in a small town somewhere find a review for it and read it out loud. Here's an example from an actual road trip.

Pink Floyd and Politics

Short one, conservative Pink Floyd fans confuse me. Recently Roger Waters on the Us+Them tour has gotten very political and a bunch of conservatives walked out on his show. To which I say, why are you shocked!? Pink Floyd has been very political over the years and yet all of a sudden now you realize that the socialist man on stage is a socialist and dislikes the current politics because he said it. But apparently when he sings it you don't notice. This is why people need to be thinking about the lyrics.
